Electrical Contractors in North Carolina (NC)

Electrical Licensing is regulated by the North Carolina Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC). There are 10 different classifications of electrical contracting licenses. Pre-approval is required to take the exam. Exams are administered by PSI and cannot be taken out-of-state.

Reciprocity is available to license holders in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

North Carolina General Contractor Licenses

The North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors regulates all construction related licenses. There are 3 classifications that can be obtained in any field: limited, intermediate, and unlimited.

Pre-approval is required to take the exam. Exams are administered by PSI. The NASCLA is accepted for the building classification.

There is a 30 day hold on all applications.

Requirements to obtain State Contractors License

North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC):

  • Form a legal entity: Register an LLC or Inc. with the North Carolina Secretary of State.
  • This is a two-step process. You have to first apply for and pass the required exam(s) and then apply for the contractor license.
  • Qualifying Party must prove experience with Primary and/or Secondary Experience within the board-approved capacity.
  • Employer Statement verifying qualifying experience required.
  • Character References and Supervise and Direct Statements required.
  • Trade Exam or or Exam Waiver required per classification.
  • Business and Law is combined either in the Trade Exam, or can be challenged through the Reciprocity Application.
  • Bond required.

North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLGC):

  • Form a legal entity: Register an LLC or Inc. with the North Carolina Secretary of State.
  • The company must select a major or specialty classification of licensing:
  • The company must select a limitation of licensing. This requires recent Audited Financial Statements, an Agreed-Upon Procedures Report, or a Bond.
  • References are required for the entity seeking licensing.
  • The qualifying party must pass a Trade Exam or submit a Waiver from a reciprocal state:
